Beyond the Reef

1500 years ago, ancient seafarers sailed across the Pacific and settled Hawaii, the most remote archipelago on Earth.

Captain Cook’s arrival in Hawaii in the late 1700’s marked the beginning of the decline of this sea-faring tradition.

In 1976, Captain Kavika Kapahulehua set sail on a monumental voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti in a double hulled sailing canoe, the Hokule’a.

The voyage of the Hokule’a proved to the world that ancient Polynesians were expert navigators and sparked a resurgence of canoe culture in Hawaii.

Before he passed away, Kavika instructed his nephew Kimokeo to reconnect the distant ancestral islands of the Hawaiian Archipelago.

He asked that it be done in a traditional paddling canoe.

This is the story of Kimokeo’s voyage.
